On Saturday, August 6th, 2005 I spent the morning helping at the Portland Buddhist Temple, founded by Japanese Americans in 1903. I worked along side the older people who had been internees during World War II. We put pickled cabbage in small cups, cooked rice, and made other treats to be sold during the annual Obon festival. On the altar were twenty lanterns representing twenty members of the temple who had departed from this life during the past year. <BR/><BR/>In the evening I danced with the community, many dressed in colorful kimonos, under the lantern lights, with a cresent moon and cool breeze coming from the Pacific Ocean miles to the west. Our ancestors fought and killed each other, but tonight we can sing and dance together.
